Norfolk State takes doubleheader against Coppin State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2NORFOLK, Va. —The Norfolk State University softball team won both games in its twinbill against the Eagles of Coppin State at NSU Softball Field in Norfolk, Va. NSU won game one 9-1 in six innings and game two 3-2. 

Game one began with two solid innings of pitching and defense from both teams as neither team found the scoreboard until the third inning when the Spartans put two runs on the board in the bottom half of the inning.

Alison Guckin hit an inside the park home run through the right side that drove in Cam Andersen to put NSU on the board. The Spartans added two more in the bottom of the fourth as Andersen and Yrral Davisdrove in Lily Potter and Victoria Ruiz putting NSU up 4-0.

The Eagles in the fifth inning started to fall apart as they loaded the bases and allowed the Spartans to score on an error by the third baseman during Jade Dixon’s at-bat that sent Rylie Gilbreath home. Gabby VaughanKenna Higa, and Dixon all advanced on a wild pitch which scored Vaughan, while Higa and Dixon advanced on another wild pitch that scored Higa putting the score at 7-0. 

CSU found their way onto the scoreboard in the top of the sixth as a triple to left field scored a runner from first that put the score at 7-1. Norfolk State’s Vaughan in the bottom of the sixth hit a walkoff homer over the left field wall that also drove in Gilbreath and let NSU 9-1 win in six innings. 

Game two started off a little differently as Coppin State took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second and held Norfolk State off the board until the fourth inning. 

In the bottom of the fourth, NSU’s Kenna Higa hit a two-run bomb over the right field fence to drive in TC Watson evening the score at two all. A third run crossed the plate in the same inning as Victoria Taylor scored on a wild pitch putting the Spartans ahead 3-2. 

Neither team scored the remainder of the game despite each team leaving three runners on the bases as NSU won game two 3-2 for the sweep on the day. 

Norfolk State and Coppin State wrap up the series on Monday, April 3, at 12 PM at the NSU Softball Field.
